Domoto Insho Japanese Scroll c. 1920.
A red and white tile-roofed pavilion rises in an Autumn shaded pass, riotous crags rising up the length of the scroll by Domoto Insho enclosed in the original signed wooden box which is enclosed in a lacquered wooden cover box (nijubako). The soft shades and cloud patterned border enhance the dreamlike qualities of the scene, and betray its origins in the Taisho period, a most unique era in Japanese painting. Color on silk in a cloud patterned green border extended with pale blue and ending with large ivory rollers. The scroll measures 22 by 89-1/2 inches (55.5 x 227 cm) and is in fine condition, dating circa 1920. Even in this early work we see the genius which propelled this artist to international fame.
