Antique Chinese Scroll, The Butterfly Lovers
The girl, slender as a sapling, prepares her coiffure as a young man peeks into the room. A mid Qing Dynasty painting mounted as a Japanese hanging scroll likely depicting the star crossed lovers Liang Shan Bo and Zhu Ying Tai, known as the Butterfly Lovers, an 800 year old tale of young love similar to but pre-dating the Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet drama. Exquisitely depicted with pigment on silk bordered in Kinran green silk threaded with geometric patterns in couched gold, extended with patterned beige and featuring bone rollers. It is 12-1/2 by 39 inches (32 x 99 cm). Creasing and some marks typical of age. The scene is likely that following Zhu Ying Tai revealing her true identity to Liang Shan Bo, whereupon they declare eternal love and the desire to marry. Unfortunately her parents betroth her to another, and Liang Shan Bo dies of a broken heart. On her wedding day, Zhu Ying Tai runs to her loves grave, hurling herself inside where she is swallowed by the earth. Two butterflies rise up to the heavens from the wounded ground.
