Shakudo Japanese Bamboo Vase by Nakagawa Joeki
An exquisite vase of dark purple-tinged shakudo by preeminent Japanese metalworker Nakagawa Joeki enclosed in the original signed wooden box. They say a true artist can be measured in the simplest of forms, and this is perfectly created with a cut twig on one side, the nodules from the base of the bamboo visible below where it curved out from the forest floor. It is 9 inches (23 cm) tall and in excellent condition, signed on the side Nakagawa Joeki Zo. Shakudo is an alloy of gold and copper known desired for its dark, haunting patina. This is certainly a piece to be coveted by the true collector of fine metalwork. The family has long been associated with the production of tea wares for the 3 Senkei, and is named on of the 10 Jushoku families dedicated to the tea schools. The Joeki name began when Sen no Rikyu ordered a pot made from an armor/weapon maker (The first Joeki, 1559-1622). The quality of the piece was such that the artist was granted the title Joeki and began devoting himself (and the generations following) to the production of quality tea ware for the various tea schools including Urasenke and Omotesenke. The tenth generation (Junzaburo, 1880-1940) is attributed with having restored the family’s fortunes after the rejection of Japanese Tea following the fall of the Edo Shogunate in 1868. This piece likely dates from the 1930s. The family is currently headed by the eleventh generation master.
