Unusual Antique Japanese Seasonal 4-Scroll Set
A set of four individual hand-painted silk scrolls enclosed in a custom Kiri-wood box signed Sanmon-Sato (Town with Three Gates). The vibrant brushwork is relaxed yet approaches the scenery in an unusual manner, lending exuberance to the work. A cow gazing slyly from fallow rice fields opens the set, followed by budding leaves on a willow draping over a seaside village. Summer is as if taken from one of the southernmonst islands, steep crags and palms, and autumn leaves burn in the grounds of a mountain temple. Each scene is enclosed in a beige silk border patterned with clouds and features dark wood rollers inlayed with bone. They are 13 by 51-1/2 inches each (33.5 x 131 cm). There is some age spotting, minor on three but more prominent on the autumn scene of leaves burning under a gingko tree near a temple bell (see photos)
