Very Rare Edo Japanese Buddhist Temple Painting
A female image carrying a Hoju, likely a rendition of one of the 33 facets of Kannon, rendered in an unusual hybrid Ukiyo-e style, the subject standing on a lichen and moss covered outcrop typical of Edo Buddhist imagery. She carries a staff carved in the shape of a kekkai separating pole, as seen in Shingon Temples. Magnificent veining in the gold. The painting is performed with heavy pigment on genuine applied gold bordered in Kinran gold threaded brocade bearing designs of Dharma wheels and Manjirushi, symbols typical of the Shingon sect, one of the oldest sects in Japan, and features solid ivory rollers. I have never seen another painting like this to compare. The scroll is 37-1/2 x 95 inches (95 x 241 cm), quite large; persistent creasing throughout evidences the age.
