Antique Japanese Erotic Screen Painting, Shunga
A two panel gold screen featuring two exquisitely detailed silk paintings of erotic imagery. The scenes are incredibly detailed, a scroll hanging in the alcove of one scene signed Hosui (Okamoto Fujitaro, b. 1879). The screen is backed in cloth and features a red lacquered wooden frame. Each panel measures 16 x 21 inches (40 x 53 cm). Paper remains glued on the front framing indicate the screen may have been at one time covered over, thus protecting the paintings from contact with the air and ultraviolet radiation (and prying eyes!). There is some wear to the gold but is otherwise in excellent condition. Okamoto Hosui, originally of Nara, studied painting under Hirai Chikusui and Kikuchi Hobun, and was an established painter in turn of the century Kyoto. (He took the first character of his name from Hobun, the second from Chokusui).
