| A serene reclining Mandalay Buddha that dates to the 1960s is carved of dense Burmese teakwood. Contrasting with the sleek, smooth lines of the dark reddish brown teak is a robe richly adorned in intricate swirls that were carefully crafted of thayo, a lacquer thickened with bone ash that is used with great expertise by Burmese artisans. The robe is artfully draped and carved with deep folds. The three folds carved in the neck are seen on most Burmese Buddha images. This Buddha is very similar to an older teak gilded carving we sold a few years ago, but has subtle changes that give it a more modern, streamlined look. There is a small surface crack in the teak on the back side of the figure (see photo enlargement # 5), otherwise it is in perfect condition. Dimensions: length 24 ½” (62.3 cm); height 5 ½” (14 cm); depth 5 ½”. | |||||||||
