Yi Dynasty Scholars Painting
Two scholars and a sleeping servant boy are painted on loose-weave silk in this mid 19th century Korean work. In strong light, the large unpainted silk area above the subjects takes on a rich gold sheen. A scholar's rock in an unusual shape rests on a container of pebbles in the foreground. The position of the scholars to one side contemplating objects not shown in the painting, plus the absence of an artist's seal suggests this was part of a larger piece, but the silk mat appears to be about the age of the painting, suggesting the composition was displayed in this way for quite a long time. There is creasing damage and a possible replaced area on the left side of the silk. The damage, however, is much more apparent in the digital photo enlargements than when viewing the painting itself. Dimensions without frame and mat: height 30 3/4" (78 cm), depth 15 3/4" (39 cm). Dimensions with frame and mat: height 36 1/2" (93 cm), width 21 3/4" (54 cm), depth 1" (3 cm).
