Carved Round Wood Panel Chinese Opera Scene

Three characters in a scene from a Chinese opera are carved in relief on this late 19th/early 20th century wood roundel. The central character fingers his beard and looks pleased, the figure on the right thrusts his drinking cup aloft and, in the background, a barefoot messenger runs off holding a small scroll. A bat, symbol of good fortune, is carved at the base of the piece. A hanger has been added to this charming glimpse into old China so it can be displayed as wall art. There is a small separation between the two pieces of wood used to carve the roundel. While the two main figures are in perfect condition, strangely, the figure of the messenger is worn, which probably is associated with an interesting story we never will know. Dimensions: height 15 1/2" (39 cm), width 11 1/2" (29 cm), depth 1" (3 cm).
