| Sometimes called Gobi Desert viewing stones, or fengli, Mongolian rocks are exotic and mysterious, with surfaces unlike those of viewing stones harvested anywhere else in the world. The unusual textures seen in this stone are the effects of wind and sand erosion combined with desert heat. The stone is fascinating when viewed from any angle. Craggy grey/brown areas that look like dense fossilized bone merge with light, shiny melt-down veins and scattered spots of faded rust color. Gobi desert stones generally are displayed on relatively plain stands such as this one, presumably because the stone itself is so powerful that the interaction between stone and base so essential with most other scholars' stones would not work aesthetically. Since more ornate bases sometimes give clues about the approximate period a stone was collected, these plain stands that may even be replacement stands make dating Mongolian rocks extremely difficult. This rock was taken from Mongolia to the east coast of China some time ago, and we are placing the collection time in the early 20th century but it could be earlier. The height of the stone and base is 12" (31 cm). Diameter of the base is 5" (13 cm). | |||||||||||
