Seven-Drawer Scholar's Box, Qing
Dark reddish cypress wood frames seven lighter colored drawers in this 19th century Qing Dynasty Chinese scholar's box. The unusual number of drawers in this piece make it particularly suitable for use as a jewelry box. A notched cover fits over the drawers and a hasp swings down from the top to secure it in place. Used to store ink sticks, seals, paper and other small items, it is fitted with carrying handles on the sides to allow the scholar to take the box from his studio out into his garden. While the finish on the edges of the cover is worn, most likely from removing the cover and placing it face down on a rough surface, the box is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 14" (36 cm), width 13" (33 cm), depth 8" (20 cm).
