| White fur trim on a blue/black coat with silk pleats showing beneath it provide opulent contrast to the stark face and unadorned head above, making this an exceptionally dramatic ancestor portrait. We know the subject was the wife of a civil official because of the bird on her rank badge but rank obviously was secondary to costume since it is mostly hidden by fur and voluminous sleeves. The huge size of this hanging scroll adds to its impact. As was traditional for ancestor portraits of women, neither her feet nor hands are visible. She is seated facing squarely forward on a heavy raised chair covered in silk to complement her costume. Her fascinating face combines both sterness and benevolence. The portrait is Qing, probably late 19th century, and is in very good condition. The scroll backing does not show the same wear as the painting itself so almost certainly was replaced. This piece can be displayed as a hanging scroll or framed. Dimensions including scroll: height 85" (216 cm), width 34" (87 cm). Dimensions of painting only: height 53-1/2" (136 cm), width 28" (71 cm). | |||||||||
