| A playful spirit lion, or fou dog, romps across the front of this small red Chinese trunk from Tianjin. The legendary lion/dog, a favorite design element in old China, often was shown with a ball said to represent the world. This painted lion is worn and the color is softened, creating an inviting patina. The late 19th century trunk, made of poplar wood, is fitted with two drawers. The piece is in very good condition and is a suitable size to serve as a low side table. Dimensions: height 15" (38 cm), width 19-1/2" (50 cm), depth 12" (30 cm). | |||||||||
