| The five-bat design on this Chinese Qing Dynasty pendant is a pictorial rebus representing five blessings--health, wealth, virtue, longevity and lifelong protection from danger. The characters for "bat" and "happiness," both pronounced "fu," led centuries ago to the Chinese use of bat iconography on furniture, clothing and jewelry. The five-bat design took the use of this icon for happiness to new heights. This 19th century pendant has the five-bat design on both sides and, for extra measure, the intricately detailed bats are arranged around the character for good fortune. Made of a light-weight, gold-toned metal, the pendant obviously has been worn and handled a great deal but is in good condition. An empty slot on the lower right side may have held a metal key since the shape of the pendant was meant to represent a lock. The pendant hangs from a black silk cord that was added recently.
