| A simple and elegant wood altar with clean lines and expert craftsmanship, this display stand and cover were made to hold a small Buddha for devotion at home. Delicate pierced carving frames the interior display area. The box lid, which slides down to cover the display area, has a round front "window" with similar pierced carving that allows the image inside to "see" and be seen. The cover protected the statue when the altar was not being used for devotions. A rich, dark red stain gives the rosewood depth and is sealed with lacquer. The excellent condition suggests that the surface could have been refinished in the years since the box was made in the late 19th/early 20th century but altars generally were carefully handled and maintained. The altar accommodates a small Buddha statue no more than 2-1/8" (5-1/2 cm) in depth and about 8" (20 cm) in height. The Buddha pictured here is not part of the altar.
