Painted Qing Trunk, Opera Vignettes
Opera scenes are painted on either side of this dark moss green octagonal Qing trunk. Blue flowers decorate the ends under the metal carrying handles, and a long life symbol is painted on the lid. One of the scenes depicts a meeting of three officials, and the other shows a Chinese gentleman proffering a large butterfly to a woman gazing out a round window. This charming example of the wood trunks that were used in Chinese households to store shoes is the perfect size for use as a small side table. It is from the late 19th century, solidly constructed and in good condition. Dimensions: height 15" (38 cm), width 22-1/2" (57 cm), depth 17-1/2" (45 cm).
