| Painted around 1830 by Persian miniaturist Riza-Zade, this is a delightful figure of a grand Ottoman gentleman. Riza-Zade painted this work in Istanbul, where he was a member of the court of Sultan Mahmud II. It was a common practice of the Ottoman sultans to bring artisans, particularly miniaturists, from Persia to serve the court's needs. The painting is signed in the lower right quadrant. The subject, most likely a vizier, has an exceptionally sensitive face and elegant stance. His green boots, orange robe and colorful turban stand in striking contrast to the soft gold background of the painting. The painting is in very good condition. Dimensions, including border: height 9-1/2" (24 cm), width 5-1/2" (14 cm). Dimensions of painted area only: height 8-3/8" (21 cm), width 4-1/2" (12 cm). | ||||||||
