| Two butterflies, Chinese symbol of joy, form the hinges on the lid of this 19th century cosmetic box. Gilt carving encircles a mirror that folds under the lid. Three drawers to hold cosmetics are hidden behind two swinging doors, and the sides of the box are fitted with metal handles. Made of elm with a rich reddish finish, the box remains sturdy. Wood beading across the front has warped a bit and the lid has a black stain in one corner and a small area where the finish has been removed. Dimensions: 10-1/2" (27 cm) square. | |||||||||||
