| This late 18th/early 19th century apothecary chest once held an array of natural remedies that were mixed by the herbalist or doctor after customers recited their ailments. Characters painted on the face of each drawer to identify contents are worn and now only faintly visible. Further wear around the drawers and on the wood surfaces is evidence of its 150-plus years of use. Each small drawer is divided into thee sections, which would have had paper labels. The three larger drawers at the bottom have four compartments in each. Old coins used to back the drawer pulls are the sole decorative element on the chest. Authentic Chinese medicine cabinets were solidly built, utilitarian items that now are scarce. This one shows its mileage and that is its appeal. Dimensions: height 56" (142 cm), width 40" (102 cm), depth 22" (56 cm). | |||||||||
