| Once part of a Buddhist temple in Western China, this early 19th century panel has graceful fretwork in a 17th century Ming pattern. The natural elm wood is a rich red/gold color with good grain. Each of the three fretwork rectangles is centered with an old-style good fortune character encircled with slender spokes carved with flowers, which in turn are encircled with elegantly curved wood pieces fitted together to form flower petals and circles. Small panels of carved flowers separate the fretwork rectangles. Originally used as an interior transom, the piece is in very good condition. The traditional Chinese joinery is quite tight and framed with solid lengths of elm. This handsome panel could serve as a stunning headboard or be integrated into new construction. Dimensions: height 29" (74 cm), length 91" (231 cm), depth 2-1/4" (6 cm). | ||||||||
