Chinese Spindle Chair, Early 19th Century
Because of its clean, straight lines and open back and arms, this style of chair looks great in just about any room with any decor. The high back gives it presence but its design ensures that it takes a supporting role to other furnishings. Made of northern Chinese elm, it has a lightness that is unusual for provincial chairs. From Shanxi Province, it has 23 slender spindles forming the back and arms. The exposed tenons are typical for vernacular pieces, many of which originally were covered with lacquer as this chair was. An interesting joint, called a pipe joint, connects the horizontal and vertical pieces at the front of the arms (see photo closeup #5). It provides some insight into the world of the Qing Dynasty furniture artisan to consider making and fitting such joints with primitive tools. The joints in this chair are as tight and solid as they were more than 150 years ago when it was made. Note that the straight back of the chair requires equally straight posture. Dimensions: height at back 40" (102 cm), height of seat 21" (53 cm), width 23-1/2" (60 cm), depth 17-1/2" (44 cm).
