| From an area northeast of Tokyo once called Echigo, now Nigata Prefecture, this 19th century tansu is typical of those commissioned by a country family for a daughter. Constructed of thick pieces of zelkova wood and made to last, it may have been built by the family carpenter. A dark, transparent finish was applied on the nicely grained wood. The three squared off lockplates, drawer pulls mounted on flat rectangular backplates, and corner plates, all with the tea seedpod motif, are typical of the Echigo area metalwork. (See "Tansu, Traditional Japanese Cabinetry" by Ty and Kiyoko Heineken, Weatherhill, 1993, pp 109, 110.) The two deep full-width drawers, two three-quarter-width drawers and three small drawers provide a lot of storage space even though this tansu does not have the massive look of many Japanese chests. It is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 36" (92 cm), width 37" (94 cm), depth 17" (43 cm). | |||||||||
