| The early 19th century panels on this graceful fretwork screen are centered with carved roundels, each with a different vignette of a bird and flowers. An unusual pattern of curved, carefully fitted fretwork with finely done carvings of endless knots, urns, flowers and nature dragons recalls the style and iconography of ancient Chinese bronzes. Flowers and grasses are carved in low relief in different scenes at the bottom of each panel. Pierced carving at the top of the panels depicts a ruyi. This piece originated in Hunan Province. The panels are hinged (with new hinges) to fold front to front but can be reversed so the screen folds the opposite direction. The elm wood, a rich, reddish brown, has aged to a nice patina. The screen is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 56" (142 cm), width 41" (104 cm). | |||||||||||||
