| Extensive, detailed carving in low relief covers the front of this Qing cabinet. Drawer fronts are covered with an intricate pattern of flower-centered diamonds. Door fronts are carved with two different scenes of deer with flowering tree branches. A variation of the diamond pattern centered with different flowers is repeated in two front vertical panels flanking the doors. Sometimes called an ermei cabinet, this piece may have been used as an altar coffer judging by its exceptionally deep drawers and the roomy, open space behind the swinging doors. It originated in eastern China, most likely Shandong Province, and was lacquered in the style of the period. The gold-hued elm wood has touches of red. This is a very solid cabinet in good condition. Dimensions: height and width 32" (81 cm), depth 20" (51 cm). | |||||||||||
