| Two finely embroidered 19th century silk skirt panels from China are framed to create this dramatic pair showcasing Chinese textile techniques. Red silk damask underlies each of the panels. The lower portion of the red silk is embroidered with a vase, butterflies and flowers in blue, green, purple and white delicately couched with silver thread. Subtly patterned embroidered tape in soft green bordered in purple begins as a rectangle then curves upward and out to the sides of the panels. The embroidered tape overlaps the black silk border at the top but the open bottom edges reveal an outline of the red silk underneath. A slim upward curve is cut into the black silk so the red silk shows through in a calligraphy-like sweep. Intricate cutwork forming bats, and a good fortune character is backed with white silk across the bottom of the black silk border. The bats, Chinese emblem of good fortune, and the vibrant red, Chinese color of joy, suggest these panels probably were part of a wedding costume. The panels embody Chinese skill with symmetry, balance and unity, combining traditional symbolism and intricate patterns with negative space. Cream silk mats and simple metal frames complement the contemporary look of these pieces, which are in excellent condition. The frames and mats are new. Dimensions including frame: height 33.25" (85 cm), width 15.25" (39 cm). | |||||||||||||
