| This low folding table from Tibet is covered on three sides with intricate gesso in foliage and textile patterns, giving it richness and depth. The wear on the table suggests it was used in a monastery as an altar since the gesso work shows minimal wear but the top obviously was heavily used over a long period of time. Folding tables such as this also traveled with monks and nomadic families although this one does not appear to have spent time lashed on the back of a yak. The sides and front fold inward under the top, which has a few characters in ink that may indicate the maker of the piece. Three large carved curving designs on the front and one on each side represent peacock feathers, a symbol of immunity to worldly temptations. (For an overview of Tibetan furniture, see the article "Painted Tibetan Furniture," Arts of Asia, January/February 1997.) Made of pine readily available in Tibet's mountains, this table is from the mid to late 19th century and is in very good condition. Dimensions: height 16" (41 cm), width 32" (81 cm), depth 10" (6 cm). | |||||||||||||||
