| Made of handbeaten copper, lidded urns in this design are used for household water storage in Kathmandu, Nepal, where many homes do not have running water. Daily trips to community wells are made, usually by women, who carry water home in narrow necked vessels, then pour it into containers like this. Copper vessels of all sorts are made in Patan, the artisan section of the city, where small back streets echo with the sounds of copper and other metals being beaten into bowls, pots, utensils, vats and urns. This piece looks good holding flowers (see photo enlargement), functions well as a handsome waste basket, or, if you've been to Kathmandu, just as a reminder of an exotic place. We purchased this urn in Kathmandu in 1990. It is in excellent condition. Dimensions: height 16-1/2" (42 cm), diameter 11-1/2" (30 cm). The bottom diameter is 8" (20 cm); top diameter 8-1/2" (22 cm). | |||||||||||||
