| This carved teakwood holder and brass bell invoke both the sounds and aesthetics of Southeast Asia. The wood holder is from Thailand, and the brass bell is from neighboring Burma (Myanmar). With its clear tone, the bell recalls the tinkling sounds of bells strung by the hundreds along the rooftops of Buddhist temples and monasteries throughout Burma. The thin metal leaf hanging from the bell represents the leaf of the Bodhi tree, site of the Buddha's enlightenment. On temple roofs, the leaves catch the slightest breeze, sounding a reminder of Buddha's compassion. The holder, made of Thai teak in the days before the Thai government banned harvesting from the country's diminishing teak forests, is carved in a traditional form, with lines echoing shapes of Thai temple rooflines. (Teak items sold in Thailand today are made from logs trucked in from Cambodia and Burma, where apparently there are as yet no restrictions on cutting down the teak forests.) This evocative and wonderfully decorative piece of Southeast Asia is in excellent condition. The wood holder is from the 1970s, and the bell, which has a nice tone for its size, is of more recent vintage. Dimensions: height 21" (53 cm), width 10" (25 cm), depth 3-1/2" (9 cm). | |||||||||
