Chinese Provincial Pottery Oil Lamp
Glazed a soft grey/green, this rustic pottery Chinese oil lamp has charm and appeal that outlive its humble origin. It provided a simple light source. Oil was poured into the shallow bowl and a wick inserted and lighted. This piece makes no pretense beyond its original utilitarian intent--the pottery is unrefined and the glaze has firing flaws. It is an incidental reminder of provincial China the way it was not so long ago and, indeed, still remains in some remote regions. The lamp, probably produced in the late 19th or early 20th century, has a small chip on the bowl, otherwise is in good condition. Dimensions: height 8" (20 cm), diameter 6" (15 cm).
