Carved Wood Shan Ladle With Monkeys
Three carved monkeys cavort along the handle of this delightful 38-inch long water ladle. It is customary throughout the hot countries of Southeast Asia to place large containers of water and ladles outside houses so anyone passing in need of a drink may help themselves. This wonderful early 20th century red monkey ladle of the Shan people in Burma is unlike any other ladle we have seen. It might have been inspired by the tribes of monkeys that often live around Buddhist complexes and beg treats from visitors, and possibly was used at a monastery or temple. The monkey at the end of the handle has food in both fists; the other two monkeys crouch in a face-off. Carved foliage indicates the handle was meant to simulate a tree branch. Lacquer on the carved wood, an undercoat of black and a finishing red layer, has been worn to a nice patina. The cup shows the most evidence of long use, with heavier wear on the red lacquer and two hairline cracks on the rim. The piece otherwise is in good condition. Dimensions: height 6" (15 cm), length 38" (97 cm), depth 5" (13 cm).
