Embroidered Silk Chinese Qing Bedside Hangings
Colorful embroidered silk shapes linked together with beads and loops create these long, mobile-like bedside hangings from late 19th century China. The auspicious shapes and symbols convey wishes for a long and successful life. These were made in Shaanxi Province, hung on either side of a bed, and originally, of course, were displayed without frames and glass as shown here. Each hanging is assembled from nine cutout shapes. The bottom black section is edged with a ruyi shape, emblem of long life. Just above are five small cutouts representing leaves, each meant to ensure a particular aspect of a good life. More wishes for success are telegraphed with the choice of particular types of embroidered flowers and metal emblems hanging from the bottom point. While most provincial bedside hangings followed the same general form, the symbolism chosen and the designs of the embroidered emblems were the inventions of each woman who created them and, as such, are charming representations of Chinese folk art. (Over the years, we have found several pairs of bedside hangings that were in good condition. See our archives listing 160127 for one of them.) This pair is in very good condition with the following small imperfections: one silk tassle is less than pristine, and close inspection shows slight damage to some of the silk pieces. Frames and mounting are contemporary. The Asian style hangers may be easily removed. Framed dimensions of each hanging: height 48" (122 cm), width 12" (31 cm), depth 1" (2-1/2 cm).
