| Astrological symbols for days and months encircle this early 20th century Burmese lacquer box. On the top of the lid are eight symbols used by the Burmese people to represent the days of the week, with two signs for Wednesday--an elephant with tusks for the a.m., a tuskless elephant for the p.m. A peacock, emblem of the Konbaung Dynasty (1752-1885) and symbol of the sun, centers the lid. Around the perimeter of the container are 12 lively representations of Burmese zodiac signs: sea creature for January, water pot for February, fish for March, ram for April, bull for May, dancer for June, crab for July, lion for August, virgin for September, figure with scales for October, scorpion for November and archer for December. Similar in looks to a betel box but shorter and without the trays and deep lid of the betel container, this box most likely was used for storage of small items of clothing such as scarves. It is in very good condition, with normal wear and limited cracking on the lacquer surface. Dimensions: diameter 10-1/2" (27 cm), height 6" (15 cm). | |||||||||||||||
