| The white goats in this colorful Chinese folk painting climb a blue/green hill tinged with red by the huge setting sun. Gouache on paper, this piece from Huxian County in Shaanxi Province is unsigned, as was generally the case for art from China’s peasant painting communities. The Huxian painting community was established in 1958, and from there the movement spread across China, growing to 51 such rural groups by 1989.(For an overview of paintings from many such communities, see “The Best in Modern Chinese Folk Painting,” Foreign Language Press, Beijing, 1989.) We first visited Huxian in 1991 and after meeting the painters and visiting their homes, became intrigued by their paintings of rural life. Subsequently, we visited a number of other remote painting cooperatives and found that, while technique and talent varied among the groups, the style of painting usually could be traced back to embroidery that had been done by local women for centuries. Some of the communities were the benefactors of training offered by fine artists who were forced to spend years in rural areas during the Cultural Revolution. When their coaching was absorbed and merged with naïve local style, the results often were marvelous interpretations of country life. Unfortunately, after the paintings became more widely recognized they were copied over and over, lost their verve and were sold in tourist centers. We purchased this painting in Huxian in 1991. It is in excellent condition. Dimensions of painting: height 28-1/4” (72 cm), width 19” (48 cm). | |||||||
