Small Red Provincial Chinese Cabinet with Village Scene
Scenes of village life painted on this late 18th/early 19th century Chinese cabinet give it folk art charm. Drawn in black, similar to a brush painting, and highlighted with touches of gold, villagers stroll among pavilions, trees and flowers shown against a rich red background. The paintings have faded to an appealing patina. A sliding bolt on a brass hasp secures the two doors, which swing out on pegs that ride in grooves, eliminating the need for hinges. Sides, back and top of the cabinet are black. This chest from Shaanxi Province is a great authentic piece of old China. An interesting detail is found in the paintings along the top of the cabinet--two ancient symbols, one a sauvastika and one a swastika, both among the 65 auspicious signs used on symbolic representations of the footprint of Buddha appear there(see photo enlargement #6). While not often seen in China anymore, the symbols still are painted on the gables of houses in Tibet to bring good fortune. The cabinet is very solid and in good condition, with the kind of wear that indicates it was given care. Dimensions: height 30 ½” (78 cm), width of top 25” (64 cm), depth 14” (36 cm).
