| A late Qing portable elm wood vanity box has two drawers for cosmetics behind relief carved and gilded doors, a folding mirror secured with a hasp and two metal side handles, all suggesting it was used for travel or at least easily carried from one area of the living quarters to another. Birds and flowers are carved on the doors, and the mirror is encircled with a carved scalloped frame of gilt-touched flowers. This handsome piece originated in Fujian Province and is in excellent condition. All parts are original except the mirror, which has been replaced, and the removable metal pin in the hasp. The pin, more recently fabricated, is included to show how the lid hasp originally was secured when the box was carried. Dimensions: height 8” (20 cm), width and depth both 9” (23 cm). | |||||||||||
