| Three 19th century miniature Shan offering vessels are made of wood and lacquered to mimic the large hsun-ok bowls used in Burma to carry food offerings to monasteries. Miniature hsun-ok were used primarily on home shrines, placed in front of the family’s Buddha image with offerings of flowers and other small items. Replicating the variety in design and hue of the large full size red lacquer offering vessels, these little hsun-ok are yet another look at the care lavished by Burmese artisans on lacquer devotional items. (See a photograph of nine such miniature offering vessels in “Visions from a Golden Land: Burma and the Art of Lacquer,” by Isaacs and Blurton, British Museum Press, London, p. 153.) Each of the three pieces shown here has evidence of appropriate wear; the two smaller ones are in excellent condition, the largest piece is in very good condition but has two very old repairs around the lid rim. The repairs were well done with lacquer and only one of them is apparent (see photo enlargement #6). These miniatures range in size from 6 ¼ inches to 11 ½ inches in height. For dimensions of each piece, please see captions on our photo enlargements. | |||||||||||||
