| This low Qing Dynasty table was made to furnish a kang, a raised platform used as the family’s living space during cold winter months in China’s northern provinces. The kang was heated, usually with a system of pipes under the platform that were connected to the cooking stove, and when furnished with pillows and low tables, became a relatively cozy retreat. This late 19th century kang table, made of northern elm, has pleasing touches of carving on all sides. It is in solid condition with primary evidence of use showing as some discoloration on the top surface. Dimensions: height 11 ¼” (28.7 cm), width 32” (81.4 cm), depth 16 ¼” (41.4 3 cm). | ||||||||
