Japanese Katagami Fabric Stencil. Edo period. Condition: Fine. Measurements: Image 19" x 15.5". Overall: 25 1/2" x 17 1/2". Ise-Katagami are made of handmade mulberry paper which is sealed with persimmon tannin, rendering the paper waterproof, therefore, reusable. During the Edo period, they were reinforced with human hair. These paper stencils are used in the process of dyeing textiles, particularly kimono.
