This striking antique gold Portuguese ring is circa 1770. The respect and surge in interest of early paste jewelry is largely due to the beauty as an art form as well as its rarity. Its appeal was to rich and poor alike, as it surpassed the need to imitate expensive stones, having a unique beauty of its own. In this example the black dot pastes are of various shapes, hand cut, foil back and set in crimped silver collets. This work would have been executed by the finest jewelers in the same painstaking detail as real gemstones. The central element is curved to fit the finger, quite opulent in size going from hand to knuckle, and sweeping across the curve of the finger. The three levels of stones appear to be invisibly pave set and accented by two surrounds of gold beading. This beading was most characteristic of the Portuguese jewelry of the time. Similar examples can be seen in, Five Centuries of Jewellery, The National Museum of Ancient Art, Lisbon pg. 78 Also of note is the fact that S.J. Phillips the prestigious London jeweler has had a month long exhibition June 2010 of early paste jewelry and created a book entitled; Brilliant Impressions, An Exhibition of Antique Paste and other Jewellery. In this book, a similar ring can be seen on page 58. The ring is 18k with all stones set in silver. It is completely original and in excellent condition. Some slight bending of the gold where the shank joins the top, not impacting the strength or the appearance. Some typical variations of color as the light passes the stone, giving hints of gold tone. It measures a 7.5 US and can be sized by a competent jeweler. Simply beautiful, vibrant and rare,18th century Portuguese |
