This Scottish 9k gold pendant/brooch is circa 1850. The passion for Scottish jewelry was heightened by Queen Victoria's love of Scotland and its tradition. While spending time at her beloved Balmoral Castle, she dressed wore the Scottish jewelry and dressed her children in tartans. The Scottish jewelry is distinctive in its style and use of native stones. In this example, a traditional brooch has been inlaid with bloodstone and Burnanne agates and centered with a faceted cairngorm. The cairngorm is finely set with finely detailed prongs. The brooch has simple engraving, with the four corners highlighted with tiny gold balls typical of this period. It measures 1 3/4 inches. The reverse has all original mounts. The loop to attach a chain is hidden if it is worn as a brooch and it has been joined with a 14k 20th century box link chain. The condition is excellent. Rare to find Scottish jewelry set in gold, as the vast majority was set in silver. Classical, elegant and most wearable, circa 1850. |
