Rare Antique Scottish Agate Braided Pin
Unique and subtle beauty is the best way to describe this brooch. It is Scottish, circa 1850 and is the only one of this form I have had the privilege of selling. It is an example of the finest skills of a lapidary, as it replicates the movement of braiding, rendered by hand and limited only by imagination. How incredible to achieve this from stone. It has the traditional colors of Scottish jewelry, bloodstone, jasper and Montrose gray, all of which are indigenous to Scotland.

The majority of Scottish brooches were traditional in form, but this example takes it to a higher level. The braiding symbolizes eternal love and devotion, woven like a ribbon and preserved for generations.

The back of the brooch is slate, hand cut and pierced to allow for the spacing of the front agates. The sterling frame and mounts are all original. The pin stem is an old replacement. The brooch measures 2 1/4 inches. It is in excellent condition. A rare brooch for the collector or for the person who appreciates unique beauty. Scotland, circa 1850
