This antique Scottish agate brooch in the form of a leaf, is circa 1850. It represents one of the finest pins I have sold in many years. Replicating a leaf in autumn, with changing colors, each agate is hand chosen for color, cut,polished, placed on slate and then framed in sterling. A departure from the most traditional forms seen in Scottish jewelry, this stone work could take a skilled lapidary days to complete. These artistic forms are quite rare to find in antique Scottish jewelry. This brooch speaks for itself as it is like a fine sculpture. It measures 3 1/8 inches long X 1 1/8 inches across the widest span. It is completely original including the reverse mounts and in excellent condition. Quite extraordinary, Scotland, circa 1850 |
