Georgian Gold Sentimental Heart Locket circa 1760
This wonderful 15k gold Georgian heart locket is English, circa 1760. It is not only lovely to wear but has a meaningful inscription. This form, often called a Stuart Crystal, is designed with a flat crystal, faceted on the edges and set in a hand crimped rub over collet. It is surmounted with a bow inscribed "Present en Absence." The inscription is set in the original white enamel. The phrase is written in French, the popular international language of sentiment in the 18th century. The phrase is open to interpretation, making it even more wonderful. Is it a paradoxical phrase, or does it mean that through life's journey, those we love are always present when they are absent? Does it mean that love is "tied" or co-joined in presence and absence? Certainly, absence sharpens love and presence will strengthen it. This is simply a unique love token preserved through the ages.

The locket opens from the bottom and could house a small photo or lock of hair. I personally would use it as seen. The crystal has some surface scratching visible only with magnification. There is a very tiny edge chip in the crystal under the left part of the ribbon. It is set into the facet and visible only with very close scrutiny and not seen when worn. The locket measures 1 1/4 inches down from the top of the bail, X 7/8 across.

The locket is beautiful worn with a black cord, which will be provided. It also would be lovely on a gold chain. It is as timeless in design as the meaning it bestows. English, circa 1760
