This antique necklace is a fine example of niello design. Niello is a process of using alloys of copper, silver, sulphur and lead, fusing them, and then inlaying on incised metals. The patterns created are subtle and beautiful. In this particular example , the links are beveled, and links with rose gold overlay alternate with the niello. Twisted oval links, centered with a rose gold bow creates visual contrast with the pattern. The chain, formerly used as a watch chain, is 16 3/4 inches long X a bold 3/8 inch width. It has the original , secure closures which are also decorated with Niello. The clasp can be worn on the side of the neck for a unique look, or in the back. For further information and similar examples of the period, see Victorian Jewelry, by Dawes and Davidov page 48. The overall condition is excellent with only slight wear commensurate with age. It has a silver mark of 800 (Continental silver) and a maker's mark. It is most likely French in origin. It drapes perfectly on the neck, and is a beautiful necklace worn alone, or joined with other niello chains for a dramatic look. |
