This is perhaps one of the rarest brooches in my personal collection. This beautiful Montrose Gray agate is designed as a "Key to My Heart." Most certainly a piece privately commissioned by a superior jeweler and given as a love token. The agates are finely and realistically shaped by a highly skilled lapidary. The use of the Maltese cross would also be symbolic of faith, valor and purity of heart. The 12k gold is finely rendered in a mellow rose color. Notice the beautifully chosen gray striations of the heart which is centered with a pearl. The condition is excellent. There is a fracture of the glass on the back of the locket. It could be replaced if desired, but is perfectly stable and original. The top "0" ring is used to secure a safety chain if so desired. It can be easily removed. It measures 2 3/4 inches across X 3/4 inches down. An amazing, sentimental and rare treasure. Scotland, circa 1860 |
