Pique, the art of inlaying silver and gold on tortoise shell was very fashionable in the mid 19th century. It was quite expensive when it was produced as it required great skill and was time intensive. This pair of earrings is the finest pique I have sold. The design and proportion are beautiful. Gold stars perfectly placed in a simple and elegant pattern, are accented by thin silver twisted wire. The top and bottom complete the artistry with accents of gold stars. They are long, measuring 2 3/4 inches from the top of the wire X 3/4 inches across the middle. The execution is extraordinary, with the center piece gently curved to perfectly balance the top and bottom.. They hang gracefully and perfectly from the ears. The condition is excellent. Any lines on the reverse are natural to the tortoise shell and are not damages. These are uniquely beautiful and one of a kind. France, circa 1860 |
