This pin is English, circa 1760. Early jewelry is always exciting since it is not only a rarity, but always exhibits an individuality of design. This pin is designed with almandine garnets that are flat cut with beveled edges. The garnets have all been foiled since they are set in closed backs which was typical of the period. The rich color of the garnets have a beautiful play of color, depending upon the reflection of light. All are set with tiny prongs almost invisible to the eye. There are two flower clusters, each surrounded with garnets. The large garnet on the left has a tiny surface chip(see photo 3) and all others are in excellent condition. The reverse has the original, secure tube-hinge and c-clasp, which is most unusual to find in early jewelry of this period. The setting is gilt metal, also typical of the period and has all the characteristic rounded backs that can be seen on the reverse of the pin. The gilding on the reverse is all original and has wear as would be expected. It measures 1 6/8 across x 1 1/2 inches across. This is an elegant and early piece of jewelry. |
