This rare antique,Georgian garnet necklace is circa 1800. Designed with beautiful almandine foiled back garnets, set in crimped, cut down gold collets. The rose gold backs are all curved, typical of the 18th century. The garnets are all flat cut and finely faceted at the edges. The color has various hues, all mellow and gloriously rich. The stones are set in closed backs and the foiling behind the stones enhances the color and adds a richness to the hue. The center of each flower has a prong set natural pearl, a feminine, delicate touch. The necklace is light and the gold work finely finished, as would be expected of jewelry crafted at this time.
It is entirely original, measuring 15 1/4 inches long x 7/8(central garnet flower). It retains the secure, original garnet set push clasp and the condition is excellent. Of note, is one small crease in the gold on the reverse of one petal, a crease on the reverse of the small link near the clasp. This necklace is rare, beautiful, original and one of a kind. It lays perfectly on the neck, as each section articulates. This would be a fine addition to a sophisticated collection of Georgian jewelry. |
