This antique, silver,Scottish agate brooch is circa,1860. In all periods of jewelry there is something about the design that distinctly separates it from others of the same genre. In this case, it is not only the size, but the details and the sculptural quality. It is designed as a lover's knot, sentimental and classical. The agates are Montrose gray, a beautiful striated agate native to Scotland. The hand engraving is exceptional as seen in the photos. It measures 2 7/8 inches across x 1 3/4 inches down. The reverse has all the original mounts and has a secure c-clasp. The condition is excellent. There are two creases in the silver on the side of the brooch, not evident from the front or back. This is not uncommon and the construction of these forms of knots are hollow. I have had knots similar in design, but not in scale. This is a great match with the Montrose gray agate bracelet listed on my site. It is all original and timeless in sentiment and design. |
