Beautiful Chunky Niello Chain
This beautiful antique niello neck chain is unique. Niello is the process of creating patterns by etching metal and then filling it with alloys of metal that are fused and then filled in the cavities. The effect is subtle and lovely. In this 800 silver chain, it is a series of dots. It is the only one I have seen designed in a box link. The scale of the link itself is unusual, measuring 1/2 inch x 1/4 x 1/4 depth. The chain itself measures 20 inches. I have taken photos of the other niello chain listed for contrast of size, and also to display them worn together. This chain has an invisible hook concealed in the central link to enable a pendant to be attached if desired. Even the clasp is well designed and refined. It becomes invisible, but identifiable just by an edge of plain silver. This chain is in excellent condition. There are slight areas of wear in the pattern of a few links, not readily noticeable. It is a unique example of the art of niello, contemporary in design, but circa 1890.
